Here you are looking for a computer support company and you have no idea how much it is going to cost you.  You ask for proposals and get all sorts of different prices for support.  Why do some companies seem to charge so much more than others?  Don't all IT companies provide the same service? Why pay more if I can get an 'IT guy' to fix my issues?

If you are not a technical person and don't understand the technical differences and advantages in the solutions being offered, it will be difficult to make an objective IT decision.  Avoid making an emotional decision based on price and taking a leap of faith on the services proposed.  Do you really know what you are 'paying' for and how much it will 'cost' you in the long term?

The solution and details explained on paper is best explained in person.  For this reason I prefer to talk to you without "geek-speak" and make sure you understand the value, benefits and differences in services before plunging into pricing.  You really don’t know what you are paying for on the surface.  It’s like shopping for a new car.  Do you just look at the sticker on the window, look at the price and make a decision? Or, do you ask questions, compare features and do a test drive? You get what you pay for and sometimes you don’t know it until there is an issue or you've driven thousands of miles.

Top 5 Factors That Affect IT Pricing:

  1. Hours needed to support you
  2. Support staff salary
  3. Cost of tools/services/solution to support you
  4. IT Company overhead
  5. Profit margin

These factors are variables that established IT companies use to determine their pricing.  If an IT company underestimates any of these variables when giving you a proposal, they may give you a low price that doesn't cover their costs to provide the quality service you want. In that situation they are forced to either provide mediocre services, provide substandard support and cut corners anywhere possible. But again, if you are not a technical person, you may be settling for less in terms of IT support and not even know it.
